About Me
I am a lover of arts and culture. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Art History with particular emphasis in Non-Western and especially South American art. After graduating in 2007, I have worked in various jobs outside the art world and have not had the creative release that I crave in my life. It is for this reason that I have decided to find motivation to allow my creativity to flow free.
I have always been active in the arts. As a young child I started with drawing and sketching, mainly in dry media, where I found my comfort zone in creating realistic depictions of everyday life. In high school my interest turned to architecture, especially historic and ancient architecture, which was the concentration for my senior portfolio. I spent a semester in architecture school where my drawing skills continued to develop, but still remaining realistic in both method and subject. After changing schools and majors, I started broadening my methods to include painting and quilting, and also allowed my subject matter to become more abstract. My inspiration comes from ancient cultures and their utilitarian art as well as from modern artists such as Matisse and his emphasis on decorative art. I enjoy blending historic and decorative patterns with plant life and abstract elements. Occasionally I create realistic paintings based on photographs and other inspirational images that are typically given as gifts to those I love.
Another important part of my life is to be eco conscious. That is why I will do my best to create products that have a minimal footprint. Most of my canvas comes from the end of large rolls used by a local printing company that otherwise would be thrown away. I also try to shop the "end of bolt" bins for fabric and have plans to order organic and recycled fabric direct from a wholesaler when possible. I will strive to make sure that my crafts are labeled appropriately, allowing my customers to know where the materials come from and the use of organic or recycled content versus virgin content. It is important to remember that everything we consume in our lives has an impact on our planet in various ways; starting with harvest of raw materials, to the wages and standard of living for factory workers, the waste accumulated during production, and the end of life destination whether it be landfill or ocean.
